Virtual Optics Laboratory · for engineering students

OpticsLab

A virtual optical bench where students run 22 experiments and measure what the physics predicts. Every position, blur, colour and fringe on the screen is calculated from the layout of the bench.

About the software

Nothing on the screen is drawn by hand.

Students build an experiment on a virtual bench from a laser or a lamp, lenses, mirrors, slits, gratings, polarisers and a screen. The lab works out what reaches the screen from where each part stands. Move the screen out of the image plane and the image blurs. Narrow a slit and the diffraction pattern widens.

Calculated from the bench

Positions, sizes, blur, brightness, colour and fringe spacing all come from the physics, never from a drawing.

1/f = 1/do + 1/di

The right model for the setup

The solver uses geometric rays, Gaussian beams or wave optics, depending on what is on the rail. When a setup is outside what a model covers, the lab says so.

w(z) = w₀√(1 + (z/zR)²)

A notebook that checks the work

Students record their readings, the notebook fits the straight line, and the result is compared with theory, uncertainty included.

λ = Δy · d / L
  • 22 experiments
  • 6 topics
  • 4 apparatus: optical bench, surfaces, interferometer, eye
  • Windows app and web lab

Two editions

One for the teacher, one for the class.

Both editions contain the whole laboratory. They differ in what they do with exams, so a student’s laptop never holds the answer key.

Teacher edition

Write the exam, run the room, mark the answers.

  • The whole laboratory, all 22 experiments.
  • Write exams with written answers, multiple choice, or measurements on the virtual bench with the calculated values withheld.
  • Open a classroom over the local Wi-Fi with no internet. The students’ laptops find it, and the clock runs from yours.
  • Mark the answers, export the results as PDF and CSV, and keep every sitting in the records on your laptop.

Student edition

Practise on the bench, then sit the exam.

  • The whole laboratory, all 22 experiments, with guides and the notebook.
  • Join the classroom: find the teacher’s laptop on the network and sit the exam.
  • Sit an exam from a file on the same computer, without the network.
  • No exam-writing or marking code is built into it, and the answer key never reaches it.

Experiments

22 experiments in six topics.

Each experiment comes with a guide, the equations it rests on, a notebook for the readings and a demonstration that runs it for you. The numbers are the ones the app uses.

5
  1. 3
    Convex Lens: Focal Length

Find f from the object and image distances.

    w(z) = w₀√(1 + (z/zR)²)

Diffraction & Interference

5
  1. 6
    Single-Slit Diffraction

A narrower slit gives a wider pattern.

    a sin θ = mλ
  2. 7
    Double-Slit Interference

    λ = 2Δd / N

Polarisation

1
  1. 13
    Malus’s Law

Turn the analyser and measure the light it lets through.

    I = I₀ cos²θ

The Eye

Web lab

Open the lab in your browser.

The web lab has all 22 experiments, the guides and the notebook, and needs no installation. Exams run only in the Windows app, because the classroom works over the local network.
